What is a Street Angel?

Street Angels are volunteers who believe that people deserve care and love in their time of need. Those needs could be as a result of homelessness, intoxication, drug abuse, assault or any other issue which has caused personal distress or the potential for physical harm. Street Angels help people whoever they are and whatever their situation, for example by listening, simple acts of generosity, caring, offering practical help or by referring people to other (specialist) agencies who can help them.

What Difference Does it Make?

Street Angels (and similar programmes such as Street Pastors) have been springing up across the UK since 2005, and Woking Street Angels began in February 2011. They make a really positive impact on crime and antisocial behaviour in town centres, particularly in the vicinity of bars and clubs, by providing a calming presence on the streets late at night. In June 2015 Surrey Police announced that "Woking town centre over the last year has seen a massive reduction in violent crime. For April 2014 - March 2015, between the key times of 2000-0400 hrs, which is when the Street Angels are present, violent crime has dropped by 64.5%."
Recently Surrey Police updated the news on how Woking Street Angels help reduce crime in the town centre: “Following on from the outstanding reduction in crime of 64% in 2014/15, Woking Town has seen further reductions year on year during the hours of 20:00 – 08:00. The good work in 2014/15 set a challenging benchmark, however during the hours Street Angels are active, we have seen this level not only maintained, but further reduced.”
